Kai Lightner
Climber

"Find your passion and pursue it, but understand that sometimes there won’t be footprints to follow."
Kai Lightner
Kai Lightner has the power to transform the sport of climbing. As one of the few professional Black climbers to reach such a high level, the young athlete, writer, speaker, and activist boasts an impressive 18-year career – and he’s only getting started.
A phenom and cultural trailblazer, the North Carolina-born climber won his first national title at age 10. Since then, he has achieved 12 national titles, 6 Pan-American titles, and 5 Youth World medals. In 2014, he became the first American in nearly 20 years to win the Youth World Championships.
On rock, Kai has redefined excellence, accomplishing his first 5.14d (9a) route by age 15 and later completing the first ascent of a 5.15a (9a+). He is among a rare group of climbers to ascend three 5.14d (9a) or harder routes in a single week. These achievements have earned him global recognition, with features on NBC News, ABC World News, The Today Show, and GQ Magazine. He’s climbed worldwide and across mediums, including scaling a wall atop a 30-foot building for a 2021 Got Milk commercial directed by fellow climber Jimmy Chin.
For Kai, climbing is about more than just reaching new heights. He uses his platform to advocate for greater inclusion and representation in the sport. In 2020, he founded Climbing for Change (C4C), a nonprofit addressing financial, access, and stigma barriers that prevent marginalized communities from engaging in outdoor activities. Through C4C, Kai has developed climbing programs and community walls that have impacted hundreds of lives across the U.S.
Kai’s accolades include the American Alpine Club’s Robert Hicks Bates Award for “outstanding promise for future accomplishment” and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Team Hope Award for community service. NBC News also recognized him as one of 28 minority “game changers under 28” breaking barriers.
An accomplished speaker, Kai has delivered keynote addresses at corporate and industry events, including the International Climber’s Festival, the 2023 Winter Outdoor Retailer Show, and engagements with companies such as Jensen Hughes. He has also guest lectured at leading institutions like Brown University, Ohio State University, Babson College, and the University of Wisconsin.
Kai’s leadership on the wall and through his nonprofit work embodies the power of community and inclusion, making him a transformative force in the climbing world.
"Kai Lightner has been a dinner-table name in the rock climbing world for more than a decade."
