Climber
Kai Lightner
Find your passion and pursue it, but understand that sometimes there won’t be footprints to follow.
Kai Lightner has the power to transform the sport of climbing. As one of the few professional Black climbers to reach the highest level of the sport, he is a trailblazing athlete, writer, speaker, and activist with an impressive 18-year career—and he’s only getting started.
A phenom and cultural force, the North Carolina-born climber won his first national title at age 10. Since then, he has claimed 12 national titles, 6 Pan-American titles, and 5 Youth World medals. In 2014, he became the first American in nearly 20 years to win the Youth World Championships. Outdoors, he has redefined excellence, achieving multiple ascents at 5.14d (9a) and beyond, including a historic first ascent of a 5.15a (9a+). His achievements have earned him global recognition, with features on NBC News, ABC World News, The Today Show, GQ Magazine, and even a Got Milk? commercial directed by Jimmy Chin.
In 2020, Kai founded Climbing for Change (C4C), a nonprofit dedicated to breaking financial, access, and cultural barriers that keep marginalized communities from engaging in outdoor recreation. Through C4C, he has launched programs, built climbing walls, and provided resources that have impacted hundreds of lives. His leadership has earned him the American Alpine Club’s Robert Hicks Bates Award for “outstanding promise for future accomplishment,” the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s Team Hope Award for community service, and recognition by NBC News as one of 28 “Game Changers Under 28” breaking barriers for minorities.
As a speaker, Kai brings warmth, energy, and a deep sense of purpose to every stage. Whether addressing corporate audiences, industry leaders, or university students, he speaks with clarity and passion. He’s the real deal—rooted in the belief that showing up is power and fear is a motivator. He inspires audiences to focus on the little things as a path to accomplishing big goals. No matter the topic—whether navigating disordered eating as an athlete or advocating for representation in climbing—Kai’s message is insightful, uplifting, and deeply resonant. He proves that every step toward change, no matter how small, is worth taking.
